Bio

With a clear unforgettable voice, Malinda DeRouen can bring life to a 70 year old jazz tune or a musical theatre character. She can belt out a soul song or caress a folk classic.

Malinda began her love for music at a very young age, singing along with records at 4 years old and performing theatre by age 7. She continued in theatre throughout her schooling and into high school and college, becoming an experienced stage performer as she earned a degree in Teledramatic Arts & Technology at Cal State Monterey Bay, with a focus on theatre, radio and film.

After completing her degree, Malinda became a lead vocalist with Royal Caribbean Cruises. She honed her talents at sea while travelling to Mexico, Canada, Puerto and the Dominican Republic, among many other places.

When Malinda returned home from the sea, she put her new chops to work and dove back into theatre to play such acclaimed roles as Sarah in Ragtime with CMTSJ Marquee Productions and Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie. She also joined  Central Coast music scene, singing jazz and soul at Cibo, Bullwacker's and Sly McFly's. Malinda's voice is in demand as a background vocalist and she's sang on For The Love of Ray- a tribute to Ray Charles featuring some of Monterey's best musicians. They performed their tribute at The Monterey Bay Blues Festival, The West End Celebration and the Heritage Festival. Malinda has also recorded with The Broadway Blues Band and The Dani Paige Band.

 

Most recently, Malinda opened for The Preservation Hall Jazz Band at The Sunset Center in Carmel and danced and sang as showstopper Roxie Hart in The Western Stage's production of Chicago The Musical.
